How I Capture Raw Material on the Page
When writing a personal essay (which may later become part of a memoir), I return to the quotes, observations, and impressions I’ve gathered in my notebooks. I reread and annotate them, identifying themes and insights that begin to form a tapestry. Over time, I hope to organize these fragments and shape them into narrative “bets” with the strongest potential to structure memory. These will be my page bets to underline the nuances of the story I intend to tell.
Where to Place the Bet Pages
My next step, after gathering and categorizing these page bets, is to determine how they will best belong within the structure of the memoir. Many pages then will still be in contention. The goal is to shape a pace that leads readers toward meaning, rather than merely guiding them through a chronological record of memory.
If my journey matters to me, I hope that it will also matter to my reader. Thus, I am attempting to structure the fragments into a narrative that will also serve idioms of relatability. I am experimenting, moving sections here and there, not yet minding chronology, and allowing a feeling to emerge through this deliberate rearrangement.
What I Actually Gather Into Page Bets
- From my journals and reflections: These unpolished entries, triggered by daily experiences or external influences such as books, conversations with friends, films or plays, hobbies, vanities, and possessions, family interactions, and insights from the Word of God, are my raw emotional responses and reflections, my valuable page bets.
- From my blogs (since 2004), websites, and other social platforms: Book reviews, critiques, and opinions, that I wrote with an awareness of a critical audience have also taught me how not to write, what to write with confidence, and why write about something at all. They are page bets because they reveal my strong inclinations and convictions, ideas that I’m still testing over time as part of my identity.
- From videos, photo albums, and photographs in boxes: Today, nostalgia is often served to us through digital collages: Facebook memory videos assembled by algorithms. In earlier years, however, we recorded our lives with handheld cameras, long before digital phones became ubiquitous. The old video tapes in storage are precious page bets, since they hold the gritty atmosphere of my familial contexts.
- From friendship circles and mentor figures: How could I not record my time with my great teachers? Their mentorship proved deeply influential, their experiences having touched many lives. Their views and leanings brushed against my own: their philosophy, their faith, their principles. I once followed, not on Facebook, but in real life, a sculptor, a poet, a linguist, and an editor. Their craft and passion shaped my writing, and they now occupy lasting pages in my life writing.
How to Organically Construct My Page Bets into Story
I’m writing to weave all my betted fragments into the narrative fabric of my memoir. I hope it will unfold like a conversation, a seamless, natural dialogue that flowing earnestly with my personal insight. This is my craft challenge; at some point I find myself stumped in trying to achieve this strategic, organic storytelling. Every gathered memory treated must be able to convey that feeling of lived experience. Intentionally, my story must resonate not only with readers but also with my present self.
How to Start Actually, with Your Page Bets
What about writing along with me? Of course your story is your story and my story is mine, and we don’t have to pry while both of us are writing. However, I have found out long ago that being accountable to somebody about a project I’m doing give is a gentle pressure for creativity with intention. Start with an outline, or a brainstorm of ideas, you can do this only once, at your own time. Then probe your notes, categorize them even, or not, just be mindful of which feels workable. My discovery is always showered with prayers, because I am wary of simply projecting or posturing. The brainstorm might give you that core theme or idea, and then your work begins. The page bets should rise to the occasion and you’ll be surprised, such personal narrative is possible.
